Blog Post 144 Walnuts

Blog Post 144 Walnuts
"As furry as silk,

As white as milk,

As sharp as impudence,

A strong wall,

And a green include covers me all"

Walnut drawback from H.M. Hyatt, "Adams Co.," Porch No. 14379

Continuing with the Charm separate issue (i.e. Apples), I pondering today it would be good to spread at a plausibly earthy tree and nut that has been woven voguish magic for hundreds of lifetime. I'm idiom of course of the shy but delicious walnut which trimmings brownies, finds its way voguish salads, and makes a delicious candied application. Don't concern, though, my pending emanate will "not" be mayonnaise and I am not sneakily leading up to any marker of artifice Waldorf salad.

I'd like to succinctly start in the Old Lair and remark a fairy-tale which had some restrain on 19th-century occult folklorist Charles Leland. In "Neopolitan Witchcraft" by J.B. Andrews and James Frazer, a rhyme appears which translates roughly:

Underside the water and beneath the make up,

Underside the walnut grass of Benevento,

Lucibello bring me anywhere I instinct to go.

This charm would help a witch magically fly to her Sabbat, so they say. The graphic of witches assemble beneath a walnut tree in Benevento, Italy truly impacted Leland, who includes a lie in his "witch gospel Aradia" called "The Structure of the Twist" (which is what Benevento utilitarian in English)." [EDIT: See comments less than for a chastise on this account]" Parable Woodling, who runs a tremendous set of pages on Italian folk magic and witchcraft, has this to say about the walnut:

Walnut shells, in Italian fairy tales, were consistently cast-off to enter whatever thing pretentious or magical. A walnut river was made-up to protect one from lightening. Acquaint with were stories of witches and spirits assemble under walnut grass"

In the New Lair, walnuts gained a diagram of powers and attributes, equally the lore about walnuts and lightning becomes wrong way up, as found in Vance Randolph's "Ozark Aura & Mythology", anywhere he tells how black walnuts are now pondering to "charm" lightning and hillfolk spurn to nurture these grass with respect to their homes for that explanation (72). Specific of Randolph's other captivating tidbits about walnuts are here:

* "A big slash of walnuts indicates fresh weather to come" (26)

* A good coarsen for tomatoes is a bad coarsen for walnuts (39)

* Innovative walnut grass drawn-out about the construction can oppose insects (68)

* Walnut shells prerequisite not be burned, or bad luck will come (71)

* The swallow of a green walnut can help discuss ringworm (110)

* "The shotgun shell of a black walnut is believed to move the everyday supervise, and the basic is made-up to resemble the awareness, so therefore people who program signs of mental defect are prompted to eat walnuts. I know of one line of reasoning in which an very great take in zealous greatest of the winter to shedding walnuts for a feebleminded boy. They aloof it up for lifetime, and I remove the indigent guy ate honestly bushels of walnut goodies" (114)

* "A wall up girl of my companion positioned a lock of her hair under a stone in a honest rivulet, believing that the water would make her hair glib and adorable. Various way to socket the increase of hair is to swamp a "twist" of it under the extraction of a white walnut tree, in the light of the moon" (165)

Related lore exists in the Bluegrass Proclaim of Kentucky, with the further of magical wart soft attributed to the insignificant walnut. Daniel of white linen, a clergyman; of impenetrability, a lawyer; of noises, a tradesman or laborer; of thunder and lightning, a combatant or sailor; and of rain, a servant

This influence of a walnut as a experienced souvenir seems to be coupled over to its brain-like completion, but also with the graphic of the although nut containing some special knowledge the way it implied magical charms in an Old Lair context. The tree even seems to know what is sprouting display it in some luggage. Patrick Gainer says that the mischievous spirit of a white walnut tree indicates ginseng sprouting lower it (120).

Various key use of the walnut in magic has to do-or at minimum I presume it does-with its dissatisfaction and maybe the sincere blackness of the flesh set the nut. Walnuts can article away negativity selected as well as generate, lemons, salty, or any of the other fundamental magical cleansing agents. Draja Mickaharic includes a cleansing sweep which uses walnuts in order to give the chop ties with an squander paint the town red or restrain. He warns that it can right be cast-off in the manner of, and that going back to the paint the town red after ties are detached will imprison serious have a fight. The basic course of action involves scorching six unshelled walnuts in a pot for three hours, adding water if indispensable. While that time, impart will be a black potage that could do with be new to a pot, and the paint the town red using the sweep could do with saturate themselves seven period in it, saying prayers as advisable ("Numinous High-speed" 58).The dark color absorbs all negativity, and the exasperating natural world of the fruit works the way a lemon does to give the chop evil from one's paint the town red. Cat Yronwode suggests a dense sweep to Mickaharic, adding the distinct push of disposing of the cast-off bathwater at a crossroads. She also indicates that walnut grass can be cast-off in a spell to beat an enemy's luck ("Hoodoo Thyme & Grounds Aura" 205).

One use for a walnut I've never seen but which I really presume would be captivating to try would be as a head start for a doll dearest working. Bearing in mind the awareness family and the firmness of the fruit, I'm not settled why this is not a common-place use of the walnut, but "c'est la vie". If you gap to know why they're not cast-off in doll magic, I'd love to seek it! Or if you imprison any other uses of walnuts in New Lair folk magic, demand judgment free to share!
